Gustavo B Barra

Gustavo Barra is a pharmacist trained at the University of Brasília (UnB), with a master’s and Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmacology. An artificial-intelligence enthusiast, he created Base by Base to transform open-access genomics papers into clear, daily “papercast” episodes for a global audience—sharing authors’ work with scientists, clinicians, and students worldwide, across major podcast platforms. He currently leads the Genomics Department at one of the country’s largest laboratories, overseeing implementation, verification, and validation of qPCR and NGS in line with CLSI and CAP standards. Over the last 20 years, he has received multiple ADLM (formerly AACC) awards for academic excellence. On Base by Base, Gustavo translates—episode by episode—recent advances in genetics and bioinformatics for a broad audience. He demystifies studies from globally influential journals such as Cell, Nature, Science, and the American Journal of Human Genetics, balancing scientific depth with accessible language so that genomic advances become part of the everyday lives of students and health professionals, enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the field.
